Buddhists, Muslims celebrate harmony with monk

NARATHIWAT: About 3,000 Buddhists and Muslims gathered yesterday at a Buddhist temple to celebrate their harmonious relationship and express gratitude to the senior monk who helps to keep goodwill alive.

Participants including senior government officials from the southern provinces converged on Wat Prachum Cholthara in Sungai Padi district to celebrate the 79th birthday of Phra Thep Seelawisuth, the temples senior monk and the ecclesiastical chief of Narathiwat.

The gathering, which has become an annual event in the southern border province, featured numerous stalls offering meals, desserts and fruit including Muslim dishes. Some Muslim visitors from neighbouring Malaysia also attended. Scholarships were presented to 400 local students, while local religious leaders received souvenirs on the occasion.

The goodwill evident reflects the successful outcome of efforts by Phra Thep Seelawisuth to promote peaceful coexistence. He began his mission a decade ago because he wanted to do something to help the many people, Buddhist and Muslim alike, who were suffering as a result of the violent insurgency in the region.

He raised funds to buy a 60-rai plot of land in tambon Sungai Padi and founded a village where local Buddhists and Muslims affected by violent attacks were invited to stay.

The development of Ban Chalerm Prakiat or Ban Taseh Nua has proved that people of both religions can live together harmoniously.NARATHIWAT: About 3,000 Buddhists and Muslims gathered yesterday at a Buddhist temple to celebrate their harmonious relationship and express gratitude to the senior monk who helps to keep goodwill alive.
